Tom Szymoniak – PGA General Manager

Tom Szymoniak was named the PGA Head Golf Professional at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in December 2019 and moved into the General Manager role in October 2022. Szymoniak comes to Illinois State after spending a year-plus as a director of operations in the athletic department at the University of Illinois. Prior to joining the athletics staff at Illinois, he spent six years at Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, serving as the club’s general manager in his last two years there. During his time at Stone Creek, Szymoniak managed club programming, financial performance, team leadership and day-to-day operations at the course.

Prior to his role at Stone Creek, he spent seven years in the Atlanta area with positions at Sequoia Golf and the Atlanta Athletic Club. These roles provided great experience in athletics operations and business management. Szymoniak is originally from the Chicago area and graduated from Northeastern Illinois University as a marketing major in 2003.

Max Harmon – Assistant Golf Professional

Max Harmon joined the Weibring Golf Club staff as Assistant Golf Professional in March of 2020. Currently, Harmon oversees outings/events and day-to-day operations. Before his arrival to Normal, Harmon spent 5 years working at Stone Creek Golf Club, holding various positions starting from outside services to assistant golf professional. Harmon also has experience outside of the golf industry, including electrical trades and farming.

Harmon currently has an Associate’s Degree in Business Management from Parkland College and is continuing to further his education by taking classes and working towards his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration right here at Illinois State University. Max currently resides here in Bloomington and is originally from Fisher, Illinois. 

 

Chance Lauf – Assistant Manager

Chance Lauf joined the Weibring Golf Club staff as a Clubhouse Supervisor in April 2022. Prior to working at the golf club, Lauf served in the U.S. Army on active-duty status for 4 years. During his time in the military, he lived in Europe for two years being part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Lauf also has experience operating heavy equipment and building maintenance.

Lauf currently is working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Management at Illinois State University and will finish in May 2023. He currently lives here in Normal, but is originally from Wenona, Illinois where he was born and raised. Lauf played golf all 4 years on the Fieldcrest High School team.

 

Corey Wisher – Athletic Turf Specialist

Corey Wisher joined the staff at Weibring Golf Club as the Assistant Superintendent in May of 2016 and is now the Athletic Turf Specialist for Illinois State Athletics. In this role, Wisher monitors and maintains the Mounier Golf Training Center and natural turf sport fields within the department. Wisher has played a major role in elevating course conditions at Weibring Golf Club and is now doing the same for other sport areas on campus.  Wisher also played a large role in receiving the designation of Certified Sanctuary through Audubon International at Weibring Golf Club and informing the public about what Weibring is doing to help the environment at Illinois State University’s Sustainability Showcase.

Before starting full time at Illinois State, Wisher worked at Clinton Country Club in Clinton, Illinois for 4 years where he found the love for golf course maintenance. After his time in Clinton he joined the Weibring staff as a part time student worker for 2 years while studying at Illinois State University. He also did a summer internship at Weibring Golf Club that allowed him to expand his knowledge with hands on experience.

Wisher received a Bachelor of Science with a specialization in Horticulture and Landscape Management from Illinois State University in May of 2016. He is also a member of the Central Illinois Golf Course Superintendent Association and is a licensed State of Illinois Pesticide Applicator.
